Cherish America (Stories of Courage, Character, and Kindness) with foreword by Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11
This book is one of a kind, a treasure of carefully researched, personally experienced, beautifully recounted stories, each true and riveting. Some will take your breath away, others just make you look out the window and think. Together, they remind us of America’s nobility, and the hero within. Like an impressionistic painting, the author creates a picture from slices of well-lived lives. Some you know, others are new. Each rose when needed, and showed strength they did not know they had. If you want to see goodness in motion, reset your faith in humanity, this book will do it. If you want to remember where hidden strength lives, what triumph of heart when all seems lost looks like, you will get that. Some of these stories are historically significant, all worth telling. They are tied together by the author’s life, some overdue, others just compelling. So, if you like suspense, those who dare, unexpected outcomes – want to know what happens when everything rides on getting it right, how impossible things actually happen, this is your book. Enjoy every page!

Praise for Cherish America
“Robert Charles, whom I have known for years, is a dynamic analyst, thoughtful observer, and perennial source of optimism in a troubled world. This book offers genuine healing by digging back into history, taking us to a place that restores faith in humanity with amazing, real stories. The more you love America, the more you will love this book. This is a book for difficult times…and the time for this book is NOW!” ~ Todd Piro, Fox & Friends
“Bobby Charles, the former Assistant Secretary of State under Colin Powell, has put together a collection of stories that celebrate the bravery and grace under fire of various American soldiers, astronauts, politicians and others—some of whom the author has known—as they rise to face challenges under often insurmountable odds. At a time of so much political division, Cherish will refuel both your hope in humanity and in this wonderful nation of ours.”
~ Johnny Dodd, People Magazine, Book Review
“If you want to understand the essence of the American character, read this book. It’s about never giving up or giving in and always looking up. It’s about always imagining the possible in what others believe is impossible. Bobby Charles has been around the world, often in service to his country, and seen America’s unequivocal successes. They are expressed in gripping stories here. His book also is not naive—sometimes mirroring our bitter divide. But mainly it captures the good and the great that constitute America’s people and America itself.”
~ Richard Leiby, Washington Post, former editor
“Robert Charles has lived in and written about the woods and lakes of Maine, and the people who live there. His latest book is compelling … It leads us to see the best in each other, which we and people everywhere now need more than ever.”
~ George Mitchell, US Senator from Maine (retired)
“Cherish America is a winning combination of wit and heart … Unusually timely, thoughtfully grounded in history, masterfully researched, and artfully composed, this book bubbles over with real understanding and the kind of affection for America and our fellow Americans that just makes you grateful. Authentic, filled with real life experiences, you read these stories, and then you want to read them again. Why? They are moving, they touch you, even shake you, and they tell us how ‘We the People’ still are who we once were. This is a must-read book for those who love America.”
~ Tony Dolan, Chief Speechwriter for Ronald Reagan
Robert “Bobby” Charles grew up in Wayne, attended Winthrop and Maranacook High Schools, later Dartmouth College, Oxford University, and Columbia Law School. He taught at Harvard University’s extension school, served in the Reagan and George HW Bush White Houses, clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit, and is a Maine and New York lawyer. He was also a ten-year Naval Intelligence Officer who volunteered for active duty on 9-11, later serving as Colin Powell’s Assistant Secretary of State, establishing police training operations globally. He credits much of his later life to Maine teachers. In 2018, he wrote a widely celebrated book about local Maine veterans and Maine values, “Eagles and Evergreens.” These days, he lives in rural Maine, glad to be back, fishing, reading and writing about a place he loves.
