The book recounts his many adventures, both as an attorney and as an international business executive, specializing in turning around failing companies.

Charles Hansen was born on May 23, 1926 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Raised by an abusive and mean spirited father, and a nurturing, educated mother, he went on to join the Navy. Participating in the Navy V-12 program, he was sent to MIT and to the University of Michigan where he honed his engineering talents. Later, he went on to Michigan Law School and started a career in law.

Charles Hansen is currently 'of Counsel' to the firm of Bryan Cave LLP. He became Of Counsel in 1995 after having been a partner since 1989. He joined the firm following his retirement as Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of Emerson Electric Co., St. Louis, Missouri. He was previously Executive Vice President of Cutler‑Hammer, Inc., of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Executive Vice President of The Trane Company of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. This followed service as Secretary and General Counsel of The Trane Company, as Counsel for a major manufacturing corporation, and as an associate with a Wall Street law firm.

Mr. Hansen has been active in American Bar Association activities and was formerly a member of the Committee on Corporate Laws of the Business Law Section, and is a former Co‑Chairman of the Committee on Corporate Counsel of the Litigation Section. He is also a member of the American Law Institute. Mr. Hansen has been a frequent author and lecturer on legal subjects and for some fifteen years was an Adjunct Professor of Law at St. Louis University School of Law. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, (J.D. dist.), where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and an editor of the Michigan Law Review, and is a graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi.
